LAKEFRONT GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION AND FOUNDATION DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS
Penta Engineering Co., LLC
Lackawanna, New York
Compass Minerals of Goderich, Ontario, Canada proposed and built a salt storage and processing facility at the Lake Erie Port of Buffalo in the City of Lackawanna, New York.
Project Engineer PENTA Engineering Co., LLC of St. Louis Missouri retained DE to complete a geotechnical investigation, analysis of conditions and prepare a Geotechnical Report.
The industrial site was formerly a loading/unloading area for Bethlehem Steel Corporation operations. The water table was found at depths between one and three feet below the ground surface and five distinct soil strata were encountered above bedrock, including a steel slag with discernable layers of ash, underlain by a highly compressible organic rich muck.
Predicted overall settlements were large with a high probability for significant differential settlement. Conventional deep foundation construction would be hampered by the hard slag and the loose cohesionless soils depth. DE analyzed dewatering methods, foundation loads and equipment vibrations to generate geotechnical parameters and construction recommendations for conventional strip footers, spread footers and/or mat foundation systems.
